Weigel Funeral and Cremation ServicesIn 1881, Hiram Lyon, of Ohio, settled in Mandan, purchasing property once owned by Northern Pacific Railroad on which to build his home. Construction on the house, designed by a New York architect and copied after a Greek temple, was completed in 1904.

A number of features are unique to the house. The foundation, about 2-1/2 feet thick, is of field rock. Builders used tongue-in-groove subsiding in a diagonal pattern on the outside wall to strengthen the structure. All of the wood was hand cut and much of it had to be ordered specially for the home. The Lyons had the distinction of having possibly the only coachman in the city and carriage passengers were free to enter and disembark from the vehicles under the protecting roof of the driveway on the south side of the home.

In 1956, the home was remodeled to be a funeral home for the first time. The home was updated in the 1980’s by Tom Weigel who owns and operates the home today.
