Jeanette was born in Sykeston, ND on October 29, 1939 to William and Rose (Ukestad) Schaack. She married Logan Holm August 24, 1962 in Valley City. Jan received her education in Valley City State Teachers College with a degree in education and later graduated from University of Mary in 1988 with Masters Degree in Education. In her career she taught in Wyoming and North Dakota, but dedicated 37 years of service and commitment to the ideals of correctional education at the ND State Correctional School. Over the years she received numerous awards, two she was especially proud of was the National Teacher of the Year in 1988 and Distinguished Alumni Award from Valley City State University.
Jeanette was one to be totally involved, giving 100%, whether it was belonging to an organization, her career, community or her faith and church. Her outgoing personality would lend itself to not just being a member but an actively involved member. This usually included her views and people knew her position politically, religious, community and family. Her most notable expression of talent that we have come to know her is her trademark as “The Hat Lady”. Her demonstration of hat styles along with a humorous presentation led to requests in Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin, South and North Dakota. She also wrote a book “Row, Row, Row”, which inspired and motivated many who read it.
She gave back to the community of Mandan having lived here for 49 years, it included memberships in Catholic Daughters, Red Hat Ladies, State Library, Dance & Drill of ND, Correctional Education Association just to name a few. As expected she held offices in each of these and was the recipient of numerous awards, one in particular the Correctional Education Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004.
The love of her faith and a strong belief in giving to her church had her teaching CCD, Eucharistic Minister, Stewardship Board Member and to be there to help whenever needed. As an avid sports fan, she often enjoyed watching sporting events that her children were involved in. More recently she and Logan traveled to see her grandchildren participate in these sporting events.
She is survived by her husband, Logan; two daughters, Heather Dahlman, Dutton, MT and Holly (James) Wood, Elkridge, MD; sons, William (Dawn) Holm, Wausau, WI, and Andre’ Holm; seven grandchildren, Breanna Dahlman, Brody Dahlman, Maria Holm, Paityn Holm, Aiden Holm, Roan Holm, and Nathaniel Wood; brother, Don (Sharon) Schaack, Valley City; sister-in-law, Bev Schaack of Jamestown.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Jim Schaack.

Renae Rau - I'm so sorry I can't be there to pay my respects. I got to know Jeanette and Logan through Ron and Rosemary Rhoden. My sincere sympathy to the Holm family. |
Deborah J. Nelson - Minneapolis MN So sorry to hear of the loss of Jeanette. I have had email correspondence with her, over the years, for the North Dakota Association of Dance/Drill Teams. I know that all dance team volunteers do it for the love of dance, and for the love of developing teenage girls to their full potential. She will be missed.
Sincerely, Deborah J. Nelson |
Vickie Vogel - Bismarck, ND I remember your mother from grade school when I was in class with Andre. Prior to her retirement I had the opportunity to meet her and work with her at the Youth Correctional Center. She was an absolute joy to work with. She was so wonderful with the children she taught there. I am glad I got the chance to share that student with her and get to know her a little. I will keep you in my prayers. |
Jean and Nick Neumann - Our condolences to you, Logan, for the passing of your soul mate and dance partner in life. We always enjoyed the times we were able to sit and visit with you and Jeanette on Fiesta Dance Club nights. The love and respect you had for each other was obviously visible by the way you spoke to each other at the dinner table, and how you listened when the other spoke. And watching the two of you dance together was a great joy. We will miss Jeanette. Once again, we send our condolences to you and your children. We hope that peace will find its way into your heart soon, and the memories will bring you comfort. |
Lyla Joyce -
LOGAN AND FAMILY
SORRY TO HEAR ABOUT JEANETTE.
SHE WAS SUCH A LOVELY PERSON, ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP AND SHE BROUGHT A LOT OF LAUGHTER TO MANY PEOPLE WITH HER HAT PERFORMANCES.
GOD WILL CARRY YOU THRU THIS TERRIBLE TIME AND YOUR MEMORIES WILL CARRY YOU FOR YEARS AFTER. |
Shawna Helbling - Mandan, ND Holm Family, So sorry to here about your loss. I used to be on the Kachinas Dance Team in High school(1999-2002). I will always remember Jeanette being at every competition, either judging or as an acting member of the NDADD (North Dakota Association of Dance and Drill), and she would always wear her "Braves" pin and her black and white hat. The best memory of her at the competition was at the 16th Birthday of NDADD and she had a great birthday hat and the best PJ's in the place! She was a great lady and the world will miss her a lot. Thanks for all the smiles and the memories!
May God Bless the Family and allow Jeanette to rest in peace! |
Elizabeth and Norton Sweet - Lacey, WA We are so saddened by the passing of Jan, she was a special lady. I was the Holm's next door neighbor and babysitter and have known them since 1969. Jan had taught me to knit and many life lessons which I still remember to this day. I felt like part of their family, and I am so grateful that my husband got to meet her and spend time with her and family on many occasions. Our thoughts and prayers are with Logan & family. |
Lynda Chesrown - Mesa, AZ My sincere condolences to you Logan, and your family. Jeanette was always a true friend whether we were going to dance competitions or just with the rest of the gals going to a meeting. Her wisdom and sincerity will be truly missed. April (Dennis) Robinson - I was so sad to hear that Jeanette had passed. She was my drill team advisor all 4 years at Mandan (1991-1995) and was so committed to us girls - not just as dancers but as young ladies and for that she will have an everlasting mark on my life. She had a wonderful smile and way about her and her passion for everything she did will be a lasting memory for us all. God Bless ~ |
Kelly and Stacey Leben - Bismarck, ND Jeanette was such a neat lady that will never be forgotten. I worked at YCC when she was there and remember her bubbly personality and giggle. We will also never forget how good she was to Kelly's dad, Lenny Leben. Lenny worked at YCC with Jeanette and when he was struggling due to ALS Jeanette was so good to come and visit him. One time when visiting with her at Lenny's, we were talking about how much we love chocolate and she whispered that she LOVES chocolate with a can of beer! It is neat to think about how many kids lives were changed due to this wonderful lady. She will be missed. |
Susan Davis – Mandan, ND Dear Logan, Bill and I were so saddened to hear of Jeanette’s illness and then her death. Our thoughts have been with you and your family during this most difficult time. As a former next-door neighbor to you and Jeanette, I know how very much you and many, many others will miss her.
We are thinking of you and your children and grandchildren on the sad loss of your wife and partner, mother, grandmother and sister. |
Jodi Zander - My heart is full of sadness now at the lost of Jeanette, I thank God that he will replace that sadness with joy in the memories that I shared with her. Jann FritzHuspen - Dean Logan and Family,
Therese Demars told me recently of Jeanette’s passing. What an amazing person she was. Her faith-filled life positively impacted so very many others. I first met Jeanette through Cursillo and that’s when her full-of-life attitude won me over. It is a great loss to the community and to the many people whose lives she touched.
You are all in my prayers, Jann FritzHuspen |
