Fred was born on August 25, 1939 to Fred Sr. and Laura (Fallgren) Kist in Mandan, ND. He attended Mandan High School and Dickinson State College where he participated in rodeo, in particular, bull riding. It was there he meet Ellen Trotter of Grassy Butte, ND. They were married December 27, 1960 in Mandan. His strong dedication to his career started at age 9 when he began working at Kist Livestock. Though this became his life’s work, it was also his lifestyle. Even though he was the president, he was involved in all phases of the business. To balance his life’s work, he enjoyed going out to the field as a way to relax, enjoy nature and private time. He had a very generous spirit, always looking out for the disadvantaged and making sure they would get a break. He would find duties they could do at the sale barn or in the field.

To relax he enjoyed watching old western movies, Andy Griffith, professional football, professional rodeo and took a special interest in watching his grandson, Jesse, win the State Basketball Championship in 2009. Additionally, he looked forward to fishing in Flin Flon, Canada and hunting in the fall. In 1956, he won the State High School Bull Riding Championship, and in 1959, he was the National College Bull Riding Champion. His avid interest in rodeo continued throughout his life. Fred had a strong, positive attitude even with his recent illness; a highlight was when he purchased his new truck.

He will be greatly missed by his daughter, Cindy (Darin) Schafer, Mandan; two sons, Jerry (Korinne) Kist, Mandan, and Terry Kist, Bismarck; two grandsons, Jesse and Jake Kist, Mandan; special friend, Lila (Melodie) Wannemacher of Washburn; two sisters, Laura Jean (Harold) Rebenitsch, Detroit Lakes, MN, and Mary (Mike) Burnette, Spokane, WA; brother, Bill (Mary Sue) Kist, Bismarck.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Ellen, who died in 2003.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Mike Klostreich -
Fred was a fine man,for 16 years that I knew Fred, he had  an upbeat attitude and positiveoutlook on life. He was a very faithful customer, one time he accidentally parked in a handicap zone and he said it cost him 111 dollars for his last haircut next time he was in, but did not complain Even when he was diagnosed with cancer,I told him he would beat it, he said we will sure try!! My deepest Condolences to all of  Fred's family

Larry (Lawrence) Koffler - Wing ND
I met Freddie in the hospital in 1956 and we had kept in touch ever since, especially at the sales ring.
I will miss this guy and may he rest in peace.
My sympathies to his family,
Scott Nelson and Family - Solen
Will miss seeing him setting on his spot in the ring just below Angie and Lisa. He would always say hi to me when I would stand in that corner near the phone box. Don't think I'll ever be able to attend a sale without seeing his perch and remembering him.

Condolences to the family.

I only knew Fred a short while as his neighbor in the condo building.  He would always smile and wave to me when he drove by my condo when I was outside.  My prayers and thoughts are with you during this time of sorrow.

Joel W.Schaaf ("JoJo") - Kelso, WA

It was with sorrow that I rec'd the news of Fred's passing a short while ago; I offer my greatest sympathies to the family.
I had learned of his illness in my recent visit to Mandan, and remain sorry I had not managed to visit him during that time.

Somewhat coincidentally, brother David and I visited the Chase NWR area near Medina and drove by the angled road entrance to "Dawson Farm".  Just now reading over Fred's life highlights, I recalled and deeply appreciated a number (some of them amusing!) of adventures "Little Freddie" led me through in some early 50's farm visits there. My Thanks Again! to him for his contributions towards my having a brief but complete "farm experience".

Again, my condolences,

Beth Tibke - Fargo, ND
Jerry, Terry, and Cindy,
I am so sorry for your loss.  I have so many memories of Freddy.  He was such a good man.  You all were such a staple of my childhood.  If we could all just go back to that time….  God bless you and thanks for sharing your dad with the world!
